_"Our job is not just to feed the hungry, but to empower the hungry to feed themselves."

In the early 1800's, the community placed food in this hollow tree for the slaves running towards freedom. We honor our regional Underground Railroad legacy of helping people achieve freedom through food sovereignty.

growingSOUL         Sustainable
Opportunities for
Universal
Learning
is dedicated to educating the public about the vital role of human interdependence and  reciprocity in developing and promoting a sustainable food system
that benefits the health of individuals, communities, and our planet. One that helps community members connect to one another and our earth, and in the process of growing food, helps grow our SOULs.

At growingSOUL, we demonstrate and teach the strategies necessary to create a zero-waste food cycle including composting, local food production, preparation, and preservation all fueled by renewable energies. Our Culinerati volunteer corps are a universal community, a diverse multi-generational organization, where young and old people from all walks of life engage in hands-on opportunities where they can own their knowledge, become lifelong learners and connectors, spread the word and be a part of growing a movement, not apart from it.

Recent Events

This Earth Day, growingSOUL organized a composting pilot at Montgomery County Public School's Burning Tree Elementary School and set up a worm bin in their 3rd grade classroom. This is the FIRST composting pilot for MCPS!

For Sandy Spring Friends School's Earth Stewardship Day, growingSOUL taught over 50 friends how to make their own pickles and kimchi!

This summer, growingSOUL co-founded the Montgomery County Food Council to advocate for a just, sustainable system in our nation's capital.  On October 24, 2011, the first National Food Day was celebrated with Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal and County Executive Isiah Leggett, formally announcing the formation of the Montgomery County Food Council.
